Challenge Title — The Value of Writing Goals

Challenge Description

This particular issue may not seem like a challenge to many of you. You have written business goals, you review them twice a year with your manager; you spend the better part of 2 days getting your Annual Performance Review to your manager. I commend you your commitment to this process.

However, I can not tell you how many of my clients share anyone of the following with me:

"Well, I don’t have them written down."
"I keep them in my head."
"I don’t have time to do my personal goals."
"I sort of have a 5 year plan."

Organizing is a holistic pursuit. I treat each client as one whole being. What affects one aspect of their lives, affects all aspects. If you only focus on your intended professional goals, how can you map your course personally?

Benefit of Course Correction

1. Writing personal goals is the first step in achieving work/life balance. It is     the process which helps define what you want your life to be.

2. Writing personal goals enables you to put parameters around what you     are not wiling to do.

3. If you haven’t decided where you want to be, how will you know if you     got there or not?

My top five rules for successful Goal Setting:

1. They MUST be written down
     a.  The most powerful step in achieving goals is to write them down.
     b.  Unwritten goals are not goals at all,but wishful thinking.
     c.  Written goals hold you accountable to yourself.

2.  They must be SMART
     a.  Specific and Measurable
     b.  Motivating
     c.  Attainable
     d.  Relevant
     e.  Time bound

3.  They must be accessible

4.  They must be visited frequently

5.  They must be stated in the affirmative

4.  Add to each in order or randomly.

5.  Tweak and fine-tune LATER, for now just get them down on paper.
